Stargazer - Shelagh McDonald

Stargazer - Shelagh McDonald released in 1971

This is the first album I write about here, and I'm so excited to wriet about this album because this is one of my favorite albums!

Though I like this album, I believe many people have never heard of her name before.
She only released two albums before she suddenly disapeared from music scene.  No wonder many people don't know about her.
But I'm sure you guys will be hooked on her music if you give it a listen!

This album, Stargazer following her first one, Album, has a sound similar to Joni Mitchell or Sandy Denny (if you don't know Sandy Denny, I highly recommend her music too!), and as you can see from my explanation, fits in the catgory of Acid Folk.

Leaving Scotland behind in the 60's, where she was born and grew up, she got an opportunity to meet another folk singer, Keith Christmas at folk clubs who introduced her to Sandy Robertson's September Production, and released her first album from B&C Records in 1970.

This album was backed by the members of Fotheringay and Mighty Baby and arranger Robert Kirby, who were notable in the trad folk scene and this album got a good review from both music critics and listeners.

Stargazer is her 2nd album, and was also backed by trad folk musicians like Robert Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Danny Thompson of The Pentangle.
This album has a trad song called "Dowie Dens Of Yarrow," which was covered by Burt Jansch and Marc Ellington as well.  This song is really long (about 6 mins long!), but I really love it and I want to cover this song someday!

In addition to "Dowie Dens Of Yarrow," "Odyssey" is worth mentioning here.  Richard Thompson played the guitar in this song, and I think this guitar solo fits the forlorn sound.

I heard she came back to music scene several years ago and performed some songs on stage as well.  I hope she will be ablt to come to Japan to tour someday!

Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle (1966)

As I mentioned The Cyrkle in John Simon's album , I picked up The Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball today! Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes met at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and formed a band called Rhondells, and Brian Epstein, The Beatle's manager at that time, found them and that led to their contract with Brian Epstein's NEMS Enterprise in 1966. They were renamed as The Cyrkle (and it is said that John Lennon provided them with their unique spelling of their new name!), and released their debut album called Red Rubber Ball . Tom Dawes toured as a bassist of Simon & Garfunkel's band, so it is said that Paul Simon gave him a song "Red Rubber Band" penned by Paul Simon and The Seeker's Bruce Woodley. This debut album was produced by John Simon as I mentioned before, and this was released from Columbia and became the first hit for both The Cyrkle and John Simon.  Red Rubber Ball reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Paul Simon also reco...

John's Simon's Album - John Simon (1970)

John Simon's Album - John Simon John Simon is a producer who produced Janis Joplin, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Simon & Garfunkel.  He has been familiar with music and a music lover since he was a child, and he produced The Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball after he graduated from university. Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle I personally like this Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball and want to cover the title song someday.  I think I should pick it up to write about here in the near future, for I have this album as well, and I think it's worth listening. Anyway, before I can write about that here, here's The Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball." This song became the first hit to John Simon as well as The Cyrkle, and his turning point was when he met Bob Dylan and The Band in Woodstock in 1970. That was a year after the famous Woodstock festival, and Bod Dylan inspired him to write his own songs and record them.  It is little known that he recorded several songs ...

The Madcap Laughs - Syd Barrett
