Stargazer - Shelagh McDonald

Stargazer - Shelagh McDonald released in 1971

This is the first album I write about here, and I'm so excited to wriet about this album because this is one of my favorite albums!

Though I like this album, I believe many people have never heard of her name before.
She only released two albums before she suddenly disapeared from music scene.  No wonder many people don't know about her.
But I'm sure you guys will be hooked on her music if you give it a listen!

This album, Stargazer following her first one, Album, has a sound similar to Joni Mitchell or Sandy Denny (if you don't know Sandy Denny, I highly recommend her music too!), and as you can see from my explanation, fits in the catgory of Acid Folk.

Leaving Scotland behind in the 60's, where she was born and grew up, she got an opportunity to meet another folk singer, Keith Christmas at folk clubs who introduced her to Sandy Robertson's September Production, and released her first album from B&C Records in 1970.

This album was backed by the members of Fotheringay and Mighty Baby and arranger Robert Kirby, who were notable in the trad folk scene and this album got a good review from both music critics and listeners.

Stargazer is her 2nd album, and was also backed by trad folk musicians like Robert Thompson, Dave Mattacks, Danny Thompson of The Pentangle.
This album has a trad song called "Dowie Dens Of Yarrow," which was covered by Burt Jansch and Marc Ellington as well.  This song is really long (about 6 mins long!), but I really love it and I want to cover this song someday!

In addition to "Dowie Dens Of Yarrow," "Odyssey" is worth mentioning here.  Richard Thompson played the guitar in this song, and I think this guitar solo fits the forlorn sound.

I heard she came back to music scene several years ago and performed some songs on stage as well.  I hope she will be ablt to come to Japan to tour someday!

Hungry Chuck - Hungry Chuck (1972)

Hungry Chuck - Hungry Chuck The information of Hungry Chuck is hard to come by, for they only released one album whose sales were poor and broke up soon afterward.  All I know is that most memberd of Hungry Chuck played in a Canadian band called Great Speckled Bird.  Great Speckled Bird were formed by Canadian duo, Ian & Sylvia in 1969. They joined Festival Express and traveled across Canada by train, along with Janis Joplin and Grateful Dead.  I found a video of their performance at Festival Express on YouTube but Ian & Sylvia basically dominated the video so you can't see Great Speckled Bird a lot here lol.  But their performance is awesome! Amos Garrett was one of the members of Great Speckled Bird and also Hungry Chuck formed in Woodstock, NY. FYI, Garrett played the guitar solo on Maria Muldaur's "Midnight At The Oasis."  In addition, he recorded with Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren and Emmylou Harris. Ben Keith was also a member of both G...

The Madcap Laughs - Syd Barrett

Butterfly - The Hollies

Butterfly - The Hollies  1967 Well, first of all, I forgot to write an article yesterday even though I said I would write an article a day lol.  But don’t worry I will write an article today! Speaking of The Hollies, have you ever listened to Butterfy ?  Or have you heard of them before? If you are into psychedelic music or soft rock, I guess you must listen to Butterfly . Allan Clarke, Graham Nash, and Tony Hicks mainly wrote songs by The Hollies, but notable songs from this album was written by Graham Nash.  He contributed to making this album better. Butterfly followed their psychedelic album, Evolution, which was inspired by The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's , and has some psychedelic songs like "Maker." They used sitaar in this song! It seems many musicians used sitaar in the late 60's.  Such a psychedelic song! My fav music is psychedeli rock and acid folk (and that's why I write about albums of these genres here), but this albu...
