The Move - The Move

The Move 1968

Maybe many of you have heard of Electric Light Orchestra before and are even fans of them, but do you know ELO was a band called The Move?
It seems to me even may fans of ELO don't know this fact.

And that's why I wanted to pick up their album here lol.

This album is the band's debut and was arranged by Tony Visconti.   Roy Wood played an important role in this album as he wrote most of the songs except Weekend (this is Eddie Cochran's cover), Hey Grandma (this is Moby Grape's cover) and Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.
Also, they were particular about the recordings (you can see that from the sue of the reverse tape technique), and thus this album was experimental in my opinion.

Though some songs like Flowers in the Rain and Cherry Blossom Clinic were controversial at that time, they succeeded to make this album more fun to listen to.
As for their sound, several songs were similar to The Who in the 60's, but it can't be helped because this album was released in the late 60's as well.

My favorite songs are Flowers In The Rain, Useless Information, Yellow Rainbow, and Fire Brigade.
I post these songs here for y'all.

I guess you will love "Flowers In The Rain" if you like psychedelic music in the 60's because this song indeed sounds like psychedelic.   So 60's lol.

The reason why I wrote that their sound was similar to The Who is because I listened to "Useless Information" and "Fire Brigade."  Though these two songs are my favs, they sound like The Who, just give them a listen! And let me know what your opinion is.

The reverse tape technique is used in "Yellow Rainbow" and it is the first song of this album, so it was the most impressive song in it at least to me when I first listened to this album.

It seems many kinds of music (doo-wop, rockabilly, and standard number) are mixed here, so you can see Roy Wood was influenced by various genres of music.

Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle (1966)

As I mentioned The Cyrkle in John Simon's album , I picked up The Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball today! Don Dannemann and Tom Dawes met at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and formed a band called Rhondells, and Brian Epstein, The Beatle's manager at that time, found them and that led to their contract with Brian Epstein's NEMS Enterprise in 1966. They were renamed as The Cyrkle (and it is said that John Lennon provided them with their unique spelling of their new name!), and released their debut album called Red Rubber Ball . Tom Dawes toured as a bassist of Simon & Garfunkel's band, so it is said that Paul Simon gave him a song "Red Rubber Band" penned by Paul Simon and The Seeker's Bruce Woodley. This debut album was produced by John Simon as I mentioned before, and this was released from Columbia and became the first hit for both The Cyrkle and John Simon.  Red Rubber Ball reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Paul Simon also reco...

John's Simon's Album - John Simon (1970)

John Simon's Album - John Simon John Simon is a producer who produced Janis Joplin, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Simon & Garfunkel.  He has been familiar with music and a music lover since he was a child, and he produced The Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball after he graduated from university. Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle I personally like this Cyrkle's Red Rubber Ball and want to cover the title song someday.  I think I should pick it up to write about here in the near future, for I have this album as well, and I think it's worth listening. Anyway, before I can write about that here, here's The Cyrkle's "Red Rubber Ball." This song became the first hit to John Simon as well as The Cyrkle, and his turning point was when he met Bob Dylan and The Band in Woodstock in 1970. That was a year after the famous Woodstock festival, and Bod Dylan inspired him to write his own songs and record them.  It is little known that he recorded several songs ...

The Madcap Laughs - Syd Barrett
